Lazio, the area with a lot of history
Lazio (Latin: Latium) is a region in the centre of Italy that is bordered by Tuscany, Umbria, Abruzzo, Molise, Campania and the Tyrrhenian Sea. The name Lazio comes from the ancient people the Latins. Even before the Romans, Lazio was the birthplace of Etruscan culture, which, among other things, left beautifully painted tombs.
With Rome as its capital, Lazio is a very important area in terms of history, art, architecture, archaeology, religion and culture. Rome offers a range of sights to see. A selection of the possibilities; the Pantheon, Termi di Caracalla, Castell Sant’Angelo, Piazza Navona and Fontana di Trevi. Outside Rome, hundreds of abbeys, churches, monuments, palaces and other places of interest can be found throughout the region.
A wealth of beautiful places
The hinterland of Rome is quiet and sparsely populated. However, there is plenty to see, lovely lakes such as Bolsena and Vico, historic centres of towns and villages, e.g. Frascati and Tivoli with its beautiful Villa Hadriana, beautiful gardens of Villa Lante, the ancient Roman port in Ostia Antica and Etruscan finds in Tarquinia.
The region also produces a number of good wines. The best known are the Est! Est! Est! di Montefrascione and the Frascati. Cycling around Rome is also a feast. In the towns of Viterbo, Tarquinia and Necropoli you can admire the remains of the Etruscan civilization. The area around the villas of Tivoli is also perfect for a cycling route.
Beaches and amusement parks
Lazio also has some beautiful beaches that enjoy great popularity in Italy. The landscape is slightly sloping and, especially in the south, incredibly beautiful.
Most amusement parks in Lazio are water amusement parks. In addition, there are amusement parks that are primarily focused on children. The Rainbow Magicland amusement park in Valmontone consists of six worlds, including the enchanted forest and a witch world. In Zoomarine near Pomezia, half an hour from Rome, dolphins tumble over each other and sea lions clap for themselves.
